Every year, on 22 March, is held the World Water Day. This important event has been defined by the United Nations’ (UN) in order to increase people’s awareness of water’s importance. Today, there are over 663 million people living without a safe water supply and coping with the health impacts of using contaminated water.
World Water Day 2017
This year’s theme is “Why waste water” and many events have been organized worldwide, such as campaigns, special broadcasts on the media, educational events, artistic celebrations of water, symposia and dedicated events leaded by expert about water management and security, fundraising for some special water-projects. Particular importance is given to events in nature, like excursions to local rivers and lakes, held by experts who have the opportunity to talk about the importance of water clean and many other water issues.
World Health Organization Key Facts
The United Nations’ (UN) have highlights and spread worldwide some Key Facts to increase the awareness that something can be and must be done in order to protect our more precious resource on the Planet, the water.
- In 2015, 91% of the world population had access to an improved drinking-water source compared with 76% in 1990
- 6 billion people have gained access to an improved drinking-water source since 1990
- 2 billion people now get water through a piped connection; 2.4 billion access water through other improved drinking-water sources included public taps, protected wells and boreholes.
- 663 million people rely on unimproved sources, including 159 million dependent on surface water
- Globally, at least 1.8 billion people use a drinking-water source contaminated with faeces.
- Contaminated water can transumi diseases such diarrhoea, cholera,dysentery, typhoid and polio. Contaminated drinking-water is estimated to cause 502 000 diarrhoeal deaths each year
- By 2025, half of the world’s population will be living in water-stressed areas
- In low and middle-income countries, 38% of health care facilities lack improbe water source, 19% do not have improved sanitation and 35% lack water and soap for handwashing.
Reuse of the water
Water is becoming an increasingly precious resource and the actions to be taken for its reuse it become increasingly urgent. Improving water quality and reducing, treating and reusing wastewater is a an extremely important issue in environment, agriculture, health and trade field.
Reducing and safely treating and reusing wastewater, for example in agriculture and aquaculture, protects worker, farmers and consumers, promotes food security, health and wellbeing.
